ENVIRONMENT: Farmed Salmon Killing Off Wild Cousins

Stephen Leahy

BROOKLIN, Canada, Oct 2 2006 (IPS) – Canada s open-ocean salmon farms are killing enormous numbers of wild salmon, threatening the species, a new study shows.
Research published Monday found that sea lice a fish parasite from salmon farms along the British Columbia coast kill up to 95 percent of the wild juvenile salmon as they head out to sea.

It is a startling conclusion, said Alexandra Morton, a biologist with the Raincoast Research Society and co-author of the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

We are not going to have any wild salmon at this rate, Morton told IPS.

The study says there is little doubt that the source of the sea lice infestation is British Columbia s (BC) booming aquaculture indus…

HEALTH: Malaria Vaccine Within Sight – Experts

Marwaan Macan-Markar

BANGKOK, Dec 6 2006 (IPS) – Hopes that the world will finally be able to immunise people against malaria received a shot in the arm, this week, as leading health experts unveiled the blueprint for a preventive vaccine in the Thai capital.
Yet, the architects of this new global strategy the Malaria Vaccine Technology Roadmap – launched Wednesday at the end of a three-day conference, warn against too much optimism.

Scientific caution was written all over Dr. Carlos Morel, director of the Rio de Janeiro-based Centre for Technological Development in Health. We know a vaccine is possible, but in reality we are still on the floor with blind eyes. This is a failure of science, he told IPS in an interview.

The challenge faced by the medical and sc…

ROMANIA: A European Home to Hepatitis

Claudia Ciobanu

BUCHAREST, Feb 19 2007 (IPS) – About two million of Romania s 22 million people are carrying some form of hepatitis, in the highest infection rates in Europe.
Between 6 to 8 percent suffer from hepatitis B, and between 8 to 12 percent from hepatitis C. Hepatitis is the main cause for hospitalisation.

Hepatitis B is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis B virus. Hepatitis C is a more aggressive liver illness transmitted usually through blood transfusion. Hepatitis B can also be transmitted this way, but also more through sexual contact.

Medical reports suggest that most people in Romania got infected during the 1980s because of poor conditions in hospitals and polyclinics and negligent medical practices such as using non-sterile syringes and t…

HEALTH-US: Top Army Hospital Swamped by Tide of Wounded

Mark Weisenmiller

TAMPA, United States, Mar 28 2007 (IPS) – As a nine-member commission prepares to investigate allegations of ineptitude at the United States largest and most prestigious military hospital, politicians in Washington are waiting to see if any more colleagues associated with the scandal will lose their jobs.
Numerous problems at the Walter Reed Army Medical Centre including mouse feces, dead cockroaches and mould in the residential outpatient buildings, and an often-numbing level of red tape first came to national attention in February when the Washington Post published a series entitled The Other Walter Reed.

Reporters Anne Hull and Dana Priest spent approximately four months investigating the living conditions and standards of care for soldiers recup…

MAY DAY-KENYA: Export Processing Zones Still a Bone of Contention

Joyce Mulama

NAIROBI, Apr 30 2007 (IPS) – With working conditions around the world set to be placed in the spotlight on May Day (May 1), Emily Mugo has an axe to grind about her place of employment in one of Kenya s Export Processing Zones (EPZs).
One has to collapse from sickness to be allowed to seek medical attention. However sick one may be, you cannot afford to miss work: you will be sacked, she noted of the textile factory located on the outskirts of the capital, Nairobi.

To the managers it is production, not one s health condition, that matters. Besides, we have to work standing over long hours. This applies to pregnant women too.

Mugo claims that one of her colleagues asked permission to be allowed to work seated while she was pregnant, this after b…
